The guy at the hardware store asked me three times if I was sure I needed a 10mm Allen wrench. Yes. I'm sure.
PS: This fluid change (trans + tcase) was easily the smoothest bit of maintenance I've done on this thing. The simplest shit like oil filters, belts, alternators, even freakin windshield wiper blades refusing to come off have all been a pain in the ass. Go buy stock in whoever owns PB Blaster.
Bonus question: how offensive to the eyes would yellow bedliner be? I'm kinda digging it and my rockers/roof are starting to show signs of rust so I need to take care of it soon, and saw that Monstaliner has tintable coating..... I'd do front D rings and other stuff in the same yellow because I'm a monster who loves obnoxious yellow :) For reference, I'm thinking of the Don't Yell at Me tint, here are all the colors: !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

That's true. Given how often I wash my car (lolnever)... I'd probably be the only one who'd know it was yellow under the mud.

You get those metric wrenches when you let the FRENCHIES design your Jeep. (Said in the most sneering way possible.) Napoleon's influence continues unchecked... /s

Lol, unfortunately I hate hate hate red, especially on cars. Reminds me of Ohio State too. Blehhh.

The whole thing is a weird mix of standard and metric! Most common being 15mm though. There is also a standing prize for the first of my friends to find a leftover AMC logo under the hood.

Why not get a can or two of the smooth stuff and do the whole truck yellow?
I mean if you're going to go as far having a black and yellow Jeep, would making it bright yellow be any more ostentatious?

Yellow bedliner: definitely offensive to the eyes, so you should by all means do it.

If I can guess from afar, I would look squarely at engine accessories, like the alternator.
I am with you on the odd SAE/Metric changeover. I have been doing work on a friend's late-90s Buick. The "is this section of the car Canadian?" game is my favorite.

Heh, my Rover SD1 was like that – mine was assembled CKD in New Zealand, with a few metric fasteners thrown in along the way. With another twenty years of somewhat spotty shade-tree maintenance, things got really weird.
At least by that time, all the imperial fasteners were the same. My MGA may be all-imperial, but while most of the fasteners are 'modern' AF sizes, some of the fuel system and ignition components date back to before WW2 and use oddball Whitworth and BA fasteners that are complete unobtanium now (not to mention the fact that regular sockets and spanners don't fit them).

Ahhhhh it's like a modern history of fasteners. Some archeologist is going to be baffled one day.

I think your Yamaha needs some obnoxious yellow. I know I need to get some yellow on the Honda again.

I keep going through my tools to work on my 1300. Keep coming back to a 5mm allen, 10 mm socket. I swear i could use 3 allens and 2 metrics for every occasion. ..

Just checking. My Mrs. has an inch wide white patch. Looks like she bathes in spray tan or walnut stain with a duct tape wrap. So goofy .

wait... Your telling me those plugs weren't rust-welded in there? The allen key didn't round out the bolt? I simply cannot believe this. All lies being told to convince me to try to do this and break everything in the process.

Yup! I cleaned some of the mud and grime off, hit it with PB, waited 10 minutes, used the mini breaker bars that came with my motorcycle, no problem. Also I didn't totally flush the system, just drained about 3 quarts from the trans and 1 from the tcase and replaced them. I hear that's better for older transmissions anyway.

I've been thinking about doing the transmission filter change, and getting new fluid in there during that. I've heard good things both ways. It sounds like what you did might be a lot easier though.

Yea, it sounded like dropping the pan is a PITA and my trans is running smooth, no metal shavings on the plug or in the fluid, so I didn't see any need to replace the filter.
